This book, along with Hadley and Ernest Hemingway, had a lot more spunk than I had expected – being that its characters are the source for the very solitary Old Man and the Sea.

For fans of Little Bee, this is a must read. It’s a coming-of-age tale told by twelve-year-old Blessing, a Nigerian girl wise beyond her years. The backdrop is a land that is a patchwork of economic, political, religious, and cultural interests – all often at war with one another. The author creates a remarkable family marked by these conflicting interests which prevails in this land of violent chaos.

Kept my head in this book for a 9 hour car trip. The time flew as I enjoyed the antics of this hilariously dysfunctional family.

I highly recommend this book. It was written by an Army soldier (who was a high school English teacher) about a young girl with a cleft lip in Afghanistan. The book deals with Afghan culture, particularly with regard to the role of preteen girls in the family. It also touches on the influence of the U.S. military in the small towns. The main character Zulaikha is a gem. Many of the characters are like people he met and worked with in Afghanistan. Very relevant to today’s news. . .

Loved the movie, loved the book! What a story on a number of levels. I am now a fan of Michael Oher and Michael Lewis. In the NFL, I will now be paying attention to the offensive left tackle…

A hard-nosed dog story. Two hard to love "rough around the edges" heroes -- one with two legs, one with four legs. I voraciously read and cheered as they both fought their way back to a life worth living.
